Think American whiskey and most of us will go straight to Jack Daniels. The second best-selling whiskey in the world (and America’s No 1) is a quintessential example of Tennessee whiskey. It’s distilled in the same way as bourbon (51% corn, with other grains as well) but has one key difference – it’s filtered through maple charcoal before being aged in charred oak casks. Tennessee whisky also tends to contain less rye than other bourbons; this aids its distinct sweet toffee, fruitcake and vanilla flavour.
- Taste comes from the charcoal mellowing process
- Nose: balanced character of sweet vanilla and caramel with an oak edge
- Taste: a mix of caramel, vanilla and light notes
