About Author
Modnath Prashrit has a multi-faceted personality. He is a writer, a painter, a practitioner of Aurveda medicine and a politician. But he is best known as a writer—a progressive and people’s writer. The term ‘progressive and people’s writer’ is often used by the communists in Nepal to refer to the writers who support and glorify the communist ideology through their writings. On that account, Prashrit is a leading progressive writer who has always been advocating communist ideology through his writing. Highly influenced and inspired by his writings, thousands of people have embraced communist ideology in Nepal. In practical politics, he has not been successful but he is regarded as the best communist ideologue and preacher.
Prashrit was born in June 20, 1942 in Khidim of Arghakhachi district of western Nepal. His original name given by his parents is Gaurishankar Poudel. He later changed his name as Modnath Prashrit when he was in Benaras. During his childhood, Nepal was under autocratic Rana family rule and the opportunity for education was rare in Nepal. Rana rulers had strictly prohibited the establishment of schools and activities that were related to learning and social awakening. However, a primary school had been established in Prashrit’s village. The name of the school was Harihar Sanskrit Pathsala (Harihar Sanskrit School). It was this school where Prashrit’s primary education started. After completing primary level, he went to Benaras for further study. The Harihar Pathsala was in link with a school in Benaras from which Prashrit completed his intermediate level in Sanskrit language.
