Utpala Tuladhar has been operating Sur Chemicals for almost 15 years now. In 2001, she
decided to take training in producing cleaning and maintenance chemicals. She spent the next 5
years working in partnership with the government and trained other women before she decided to
create her chemical line of her own. In her initial days, she used to collect bottles that she used to
package her products. Utpala had the products ready but she still had to convince people to buy
her products. She approached department stores and shops to carry her products. People around
her used to doubt what she was doing but she kept it because she was not ready to throw in the
towel yet. Today Sur Chemicals provide all kinds of daily cleaning products from floor cleaners
and laundry detergents to hand wash and sanitizers.

It goes without saying that operating a business is not an easy feat. According to Utpala, one of
the thing she struggled with most was growing her business. Businesses require the necessary
fund to grow which is one of the biggest challenges that small business owners face. One of the
ways is to apply for a bank loan. Unfortunately, financial institutions in Nepal are notorious for
their lengthy and cumbersome process. Utpala hopes to see the government make changes that
are convenient for women entrepreneurs.

Business during COVID-19 and Adapting to E-commerce

The emergence of COVID-19 has brought the world to an impasse. This health crisis has brought
an unprecedented impact on businesses across industries. As countries continue to take steps to
contain the spread of COVID-19, there appears to be an immense change in consumer
preferences with a rise in demand for hygiene products, and these changes are said to last even
after the situation improves and the lockdown is lifted. The corona virus outbreak was novel and

government organizations across the globe published guidelines to maintain hygiene with the use
of hand sanitizer and hand wash. During the lockdown, with an increase in demand for these
products, Utpala was busy ramping up production to meet this unexpected demand.
Coincidently, her products were selected to be promoted under the “MA-UDHYAMI” campaign
as a part of the project “Revitalizing Women’s Businesses Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic”. The
project is being implemented by Federation of Woman Entrepreneurs’ Associations of Nepal
(FWEAN), together with Enterprise for Management, Economic Reform and Gender Equality
(EMERGE) and Thulo.com, and is funded by the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID).

Something to learn from Utpala

For Utpala, running a business is all about perseverance. Every business goes through difficult
periods, and delays and challenges often occur. The doubts will start to creep in, and many
successful entrepreneurs can resonate with this feeling. It is very easy to succumb to failure, but
those with perseverance will always find ways to overcome challenges that inevitably arise in
business. Utpala also believes that learning never really ends when running a business.
Continuous learning is about expanding your knowledge to gain new skills and expertise. For
businesses, continuous learning supports growth and creates opportunities in different ways.
Entrepreneurs who actively seek out new information and knowledge will have a clear
advantage.
